"Employers and Unions are Facing
New Training Challenges"
As company or union officials responsible
for staff development and training, you know how important it is for your
workers and colleagues to have their high school diploma. While many workers
without their diploma may have highly developed technical and other job skills,
they need academic credentials for advancement in your rapidly changing
technological workplace.
Adults should not have to spend years studying in a high school in
order to demonstrate that they have the everyday critical thinking, reading,
writing, and problem solving skills at the same level as high school graduates.
The Province of Ontario has stated that the GED
Certificate is equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
EVERYONE WINS!
When your workers write the GED Tests and
earn their High School Equivalency Certificate, the company benefits too. For
example:
Greater Productivity
The GED graduate gains motivation
and confidence. The company has proof that the GED graduate possesses
thinking and problem solving abilities, which can allow for promotion or further
training.
More Effective Training
Earning the GED brings added value
to all learning and training. With its focus on problem solving and critical
thinking, a GED enables your workers to get more out of future training.
Enhanced Learning Culture
GED graduates feel renewed confidence that
allows them to get more from your training programs. If you want more people to
enter apprenticeships and advanced training, the GED will help get them there.
THE CORPORATE GED Achievement
PROGRAM
GED Achievement is Ontario's
premier high school equivalency program. Recognized for the quality and
effectiveness of our program, we help individuals assess their readiness to
write the GED Tests. GED Achievement has helped hundreds of
workers fine-tune their skills so that they were able to pass the GED Tests. Our
graduates in the following industries can now add "high school
certificate/diploma" to their academic credentials.
Aerospace
Auto
Parts
Beverages
Confections
Control
Systems
Metal Fabrication
Packaging
Paints and
Coatings
Pharmaceuticals
The
GED Achievement program accommodates the most complicated shift
schedules (including the "Continental" model). It can maximize program
participation while minimizing work disruption.
Employee
GED Briefing
Your
in-plant GED Achievement program begins with the GED Briefing. It
introduces everyone to the concept of the GED Tests and the value of the High
School Equivalency Certificate. In forty-five minutes, we present the
information and answer the questions so that your employees can discuss the GED
Achievement program with family and friends before deciding to commit
to it.
GED
Readiness Assessment
Your
employees may now do our GED Readiness Assessment that determines whether
they have the skills and knowledge to pass the GED Tests successfully. The GED Readiness
Assessment indicates the level of their skills in critical thinking, problem
solving, and in reading and writing.
As
well, it provides our coaches with the information they need to personalize the
GED Coaching for each employee.
The
GED Readiness Assessment may indicate that some candidates are able to
write the GED Tests immediately and they will be directed to the Independent
Learning Centre (Ministry of
Training, Colleges and Universities) to write the GED Tests.
GED
Achievement counsels those requiring additional learning and directs
them to programs provided through our own resources, or by arrangement with
public, community, or private providers.
Candidates
who are likely to be successful with the GED Tests are invited to enter our GED Coaching
program.
GED
Coaching
This
consists of a series of small-group Coaching sessions. These sessions focus on
the skills common to many or all of the GED Tests rather than on specific
curriculum material. Working closely with experienced adult educators, employees
will learn reading, writing, and test-taking strategies. They will also be given
homework assignments to sharpen their skills in all areas. Finally, they will
write the 3-1/2 hour Official Practice Tests.
After
the Official Practice Tests have been evaluated and discussed with them, our
team of analysts, coaches and administrators continues to monitor their
progress, providing encouragement and counselling.
Your
employees are now ready to write the GED Tests, they may write the GED Tests at
a GED Test site or, if numbers warrant, the Ministry may provide
in-house testing.
Our
personalized approach rewards our candidates with a very high success rate on
their GED tests.
SKILLS
BUILDING / UPGRADING OPTIONS
Many
people have the potential to earn their GED certificate. Some can write the GED
Tests immediately, while others need a few months of review and practice. Those
who may have left school early and who have not had the opportunity to pick up
the necessary skills will need extra time to get ready.
In
almost all cases, the GED program is still the quickest path to a high school
certificate.
Pre-GED
Skills Building
With
its partner, The Preparatory Training Programs of Toronto (PTP), GED
Achievement has designed a GED basics course, from 60 to 120 hours in
length. Students learn and practice the fundamental reading, mathematics,
problem solving, and critical thinking skills needed to pass the GED Tests.
Language
Skills
In
co-operation with PTP, GED Achievement can develop a workplace
communications course for workers who require a longer program to develop their
skills, or whose first language is not English.
Fundamentals
Upgrading
GED Achievement
can refer individuals to community or school-based literacy or upgrading
programs.
The skills that
employees gain through these programs will enhance their productivity and
confidence, whether on the shop floor, the production line, or in the office.
CORPORATE
FEE STRUCTURE
Our graduated
fee structure comprises a per-person fee for each of the GED Readiness
Assessment and the GED Coaching (which includes the textbook and
Official GED Practice Tests). The per-person cost is reduced as the number of participants
increases.
The GED Readiness
Assessment enables you to maximize your return on investment by coaching
only those employees who have a good chance at passing the GED Tests.
Some companies
already have a policy that will reimburse employees for the cost of further education or
training that could be applied to the GED Achievement high school
equivalency program.
If some of your
employees are laid off, a labour adjustment program that covers the cost of
earning a GED will ease the transition.
